Federal Student Loan Portfolio by Loan Status
Federal student loans move through different statuses as borrowers progress from school through repayment. This data shows quarterly snapshots of where all those loans stand. How much money is owed by people still in school versus people actively repaying versus people who've fallen behind. How many borrowers are in each category. It covers more than a decade, so you can see how the overall picture has shifted over time, including what happened during major policy changes like income-driven repayment programs and the pandemic payment pause.
