Federal Student Loan Portfolio by Age and Debt Size

How much student debt do Americans actually owe, and who's carrying it? This data shows exactly that. You get a grid: five age groups along one side (under 24, 25-34, 35-49, 50-61, 62+) and nine debt sizes along the other (from less than $5K to more than $200K). The numbers tell you how many borrowers are in each combination and how many billions in total debt that represents. You'll see that people in their late 30s and 40s tend to have the biggest balances, often over $100,000, while younger borrowers usually owe less. It's a single snapshot from the end of 2025, so it shows where things stood at that exact moment.
