Monthly Treasury Statement
Every month, the U.S. government collects taxes and fees (receipts), spends money on programs and operations (outlays), and ends up either with extra cash or a shortfall (surplus or deficit). This dataset tracks those three numbers month by month going back to 1980. It's the raw scoreboard of federal finances that politicians and economists use to understand whether the government is living within its means. When you hear news about the budget deficit growing or shrinking, this is the data behind those headlines.
