California 311 Service Requests
311 service requests from six major California cities - Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Oakland, Sacramento and San Jose - normalized to a common schema with a city column. Each row is one service request: city, category, status, submission channel, location, and open/close timestamps. Coverage differs by city (SF from 2008, Oakland from 2013, San Diego from 2016, Sacramento 2016 to April 2020, San Jose from 2017, Los Angeles 2025), so compare rates within a city over time rather than counts across cities. Built from the six per-city datasets listed under inputs; see each for its own cadence and caveats.

California Arrests by County, Demographics, and Offense, 1980-2024
Annual arrest counts across California, broken out by county, gender, race/ethnicity, and age group, published by the California Department of Justice's OpenJustice transparency initiative. Every row is one year/gender/race/age-group/county combination, covering all 58 counties across 45 years (1980-2024). Counts split into three severity tiers - felony (`f_total`, further broken into `f_drugoff` drug offenses, `f_sexoff` sex offenses, and `f_allother` everything else), misdemeanor (`m_total`), and status offense (`s_total`, juvenile-only violations like truancy and curfew) - plus two felony/misdemeanor crime-type subtotals, `violent` and `property`, that cut across the severity tiers rather than nesting inside them. Race/ethnicity uses DOJ's four published categories (Black, Hispanic, White, Other); Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native American arrestees are folded into "Other" rather than broken out separately, a DOJ reporting convention rather than an ingest choice. Age groups are DOJ's standard bands: Under 18, 18 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 69, and 70 and over. These are counts of arrest events, not unique individuals - a person arrested twice in a year appears twice.

California Criminal Justice Performance Metrics (Measures for Justice)
County-level criminal justice performance data for California's 58 counties, 2009-2020, from Measures for Justice (MFJ). Covers 42 standardized measures spanning the full case pipeline from arrest through post-conviction (prosecution, case resolution, sentencing, recidivism), broken down by defendant demographics (race, sex, age, indigency status, and charge type) using measure_id/filter_id/location_id reference codes. Only single-year files are ingested; MFJ's overlapping multi-year aggregate files (e.g. 2009-2013) are excluded to avoid double-counting.

CRDC - Referrals to Law Enforcement & School Arrests
School-level data on referrals to law enforcement and school-related arrests from the U.S. Department of Education's Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC). Covers all public K-12 schools nationwide, collected biennially. Includes counts by race/ethnicity and sex for students without disabilities (WODIS columns). The full Referrals and Arrests file also has IDEA disability and LEP/504 breakdowns -- those are not surfaced here.
This is the primary dataset for school-to-prison pipeline research. Racial disparities in referral and arrest rates are federally tracked civil rights indicators. Join on COMBOKEY to ed/crdc-enrollment to compute rates per 100 students enrolled.
Values of -9 indicate suppressed or inapplicable data.

FBI UCR Estimated Crimes, National and State (1979-Present)
Annual estimated crime counts and population for the United States and all 50 states plus DC, from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program Summary Reporting System (SRS). Covers murder/nonnegligent manslaughter, rape (both the legacy and FBI's 2013-revised definitions), robbery, aggravated assault, and violent crime totals, plus property crime (burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft). These are the FBI's official national estimates -- the basis for the "violent crime rate" figures widely cited in media and policy. Source: FBI Crime Data Explorer bulk download "estimated_crimes_1979_2025.csv" (an XLSX file despite the .csv name), fetched live via the CDE's signed-URL API. No official national row is published for 2017-2020 in this file; sum the 50 states + DC for those years to get national totals (verified to match the published national totals in other years exactly). Coverage starts in 1979 because that is what the FBI's current bulk estimates file covers; the FBI's original UCR data back to 1960 exists only in raw ASCII master files not published in modern tabular form on the Crime Data Explorer.

FEC Enforcement Cases by Respondent
Federal Election Commission enforcement actions (Matters Under Review / MURs), exploded to one row per respondent named in the case. Each row carries the case number, case name, open/close dates, the individual respondent's name, the case's representative disposition and total penalty, and violation subject categories. A companion `linked` view resolves each respondent name to a committee ID or candidate ID by exact-name join against `fec/committees` and `fec/candidates`, where those names match.
IMPORTANT LIMITATION: the FEC legal/search API does not return a structured committee_id or candidate_id on MUR respondents -- only free-text names. The `linked` view's name-based join resolves a real but partial subset of rows; it is not a substitute for a source-provided foreign key. See the `column_descriptions` for `respondent_name` and the `linked` view for details.

Incarceration Trends (County-Level)
County-level jail and state prison populations, admissions, and demographic breakdowns (race, sex) for nearly every U.S. county from 1970 to 2026, compiled by the Vera Institute of Justice from the BJS Census of Jails, Annual Survey of Jails, National Corrections Reporting Program, and supplemental state/local sources. Includes population denominators and incarceration rates per 100,000 residents ages 15-64. The six unified- corrections states (AK, CT, DE, HI, RI, VT) have no separate county jails and are excluded from this file. Complements bjs/prisoners, which covers only national and state-level prison populations.
