CPI: Transportation

Gas prices and plane tickets make headlines, but this tracks all transportation costs together. It's been running since 1947, so you can see how your commute expenses have changed over decades. An index of 200 means you're paying twice what you did in 1982. The data gets tweaked monthly as new prices come in, and they smooth out seasonal patterns so a summer bump doesn't hide the real trend.
