Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW)
Every business pays unemployment insurance taxes, and this dataset is built from those tax records. Instead of asking businesses how many people they employ, the government literally counts the payroll records already on file. You get actual job numbers (not estimates) for thousands of different industries in your city, county, or state, going back to 2014. It shows how many people worked there each month of the quarter and what they earned on average.
