Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS)
Unlike the overall jobs numbers you hear in the news, this dataset zooms in on specific occupations, software engineers versus nurses versus electricians. It tells you how many people work in each job and what they earn, broken down by state and city. If you're wondering whether to go into a particular field or how your salary stacks up, this is where that information comes from. The data updates every quarter, so it's current enough to spot trends in which jobs are growing and which are shrinking.
