United States Department of Education

Government

The Department of Education operates two major data collection systems. The Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC) gathers biennial data from every public K-12 school in the country on enrollment by demographic group, course access (AP, gifted programs, advanced math and science), and school discipline (suspensions, expulsions, law enforcement referrals). The College Scorecard tracks outcomes for higher education institutions and specific programs, including admissions rates, costs, completion rates, post-graduation earnings by field of study, and student debt levels. Both systems aim to expose educational inequities and help students and families make informed choices.

CRDC - Math & Science Course Enrollment

When schools report to the federal government about civil rights compliance, they have to say how many students are taking specific math and science classes. This data shows those numbers broken down by student demographics: race and ethnicity, boys versus girls, whether English is their second language, and whether they have disabilities. You can see if certain groups of students are overrepresented or underrepresented in advanced courses like calculus or physics. Combined with total enrollment numbers, you can calculate what percentage of students at each school are taking each course.

CRDC - School Characteristics

Over 130,000 public schools across the country, organized by the grades they teach and what kind of schools they are. This is basically the roster. It tells you which schools are charter schools, which ones focus on special education, and which grades each school covers. Join this with other education data to answer questions like 'How many AP courses do charter schools offer compared to traditional public schools?' or 'Which school types have the most advanced math programs?' The Department of Education updates this every other year.

CRDC - Referrals to Law Enforcement & School Arrests

How many students got referred to police or arrested at school, broken down by race and gender? This dataset has those numbers for nearly every public school in the country. It's collected every two years by the Department of Education as part of their civil rights monitoring. Researchers use this data to track whether students of different races are treated differently by school discipline systems, a key part of the school-to-prison pipeline conversation.

CRDC - Gifted & Talented Enrollment

Gifted programs aren't equally available or equally accessed everywhere. This dataset shows which students got into GT programs at each public school, broken down by race, whether they speak English at home, and whether they have disabilities. You can see if a school has a program at all, how many kids are enrolled, and spot patterns. For example, does your district identify Black students for GT at the same rate as white students? Do English learners get referred? These numbers matter because they reveal which students get accelerated learning and college prep, and which don't.

CRDC - School Enrollment

Every public school in America reports how many students it has, broken down by who they are. This dataset captures those enrollment numbers, sorted by race, gender, whether students are learning English, whether they have disabilities, and other categories. Schools report this every two years to the federal government. People use these numbers as a baseline to calculate things like suspension rates or whether advanced classes have diverse enrollment, so you can see if suspension is happening at similar rates across different student groups.

CRDC - Advanced Placement Enrollment

About 2 million students take AP classes each year, but access isn't equal. This data shows which students are taking AP courses at their school, broken down by race, gender, whether English is their second language, and disability status. If your school doesn't offer AP, you'll see -9. You can use this to see whether advanced coursework is accessible to all students or concentrated among certain groups, and compare it against who gets into gifted programs.
