Housing Starts

In January 2020, builders started work on about 1.4 million homes (annualized). That number collapsed to 890,000 in April 2020 when the pandemic hit, then rebounded sharply. Housing starts are one of the first things to move when the economy shifts. Builders break ground when they're confident people will buy, so this number rises before a boom and falls before a recession. It's one of the clearest early warning signs economists watch.
