Gross Domestic Product
This is the number economists throw around when they say 'the economy grew 2.5% last quarter.' It measures the total value of everything the U.S. produced in goods and services. You'll see it go up most years, but it drops during recessions (2008, 2020) and bounces back during recoveries. It's the single most important number for understanding whether the country's economy is doing well or struggling.
