Deaths and Age-Adjusted Death Rates by State and Cause (NCHS)
Deaths and age-adjusted death rates per 100,000 population (2000 US standard) for 17 causes of death, for each state and the District of Columbia, by state of residence, from final National Vital Statistics System death certificate data as NCHS publishes it in Stats of the States. Covers 2005 and 2014-2024 (COVID-19 from 2020; drug overdose also 1999); NCHS does not publish 2006-2013 in this series. Causes: the leading causes (heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries, stroke, chronic lower respiratory diseases, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, kidney disease, influenza and pneumonia, suicide, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, hypertension, Parkinson disease, COVID-19) plus drug overdose, firearm-related injury, and homicide. There is no all-causes row and no age, sex, or race detail. This is the successor to cdc/wonder-mortality (the retired data.cdc.gov "Leading Causes of Death" file, 1999-2017), which stays in the catalog for 1999-2013. Ten causes share a cause label with that dataset, and on the overlapping years 2014-2017 the death counts match exactly while rates can differ by 0.1 from rounding. Rates based on few deaths are unstable, and a handful of small-state homicide rates are blank in the source.
