Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)

Every year the CDC calls tens of thousands of Americans and asks about their health habits and conditions. Do you smoke? How often do you exercise? Do you have diabetes or high blood pressure? This data shows what percentage of people in each state answer yes to these questions, broken down by age, race, income, and other groups. It's how the government tracks whether Americans are getting healthier or less healthy, and which states are doing better or worse. The numbers come with confidence intervals, so you can see how reliable each estimate is based on how many people were surveyed.
