Major Sector Multifactor Productivity (MFP)
When you hear that US manufacturing became 30% more efficient over two decades, this is the data behind that claim. Multifactor productivity asks a simple question: are we getting more stuff out with the same amount of resources? It's different from just measuring how much workers produce per hour, because factories also invest in better equipment, use less energy per unit, and streamline how materials flow through production. This data tracks those combined improvements sector by sector, showing whether we're actually making better use of everything that goes into making things.
